Cell Loss Probability Approximations and Their Application to Call Admission Control

چکیده
This paper studies the cell loss probability approximation of a statistical multiplexer in high speed networks. For this purpose, we consider discretetime nite-bu er queueing models. In particular, we study an approximate formula of the cell loss probability which is computed from the (asymptotic) tail distribution of the queue length in the corresponding in nite-bu er queue. We then apply the results to a queue where the arrival process is a superposition of many independent sources. In such a queue, it is hard to get the asymptotic decay constant in general. For this reason, the asymptotic decay constant has been assumed to be one in most studies. It is known, however, that the asymptotic decay constant can vary by several orders of magnitude. Contrary to the previous works, we consider an approximate formula of the loss probability taking the asymptotic decay constant into account. Thus, our approximation is expected to give more accurate estimation, compared with approximations proposed in the past. Further, we discuss the application of the results to call admission control (CAC) in high speed networks. In numerical examples, we observe that the CAC based on our approximate formula can use network resource e ectively, while guaranteeing quality of service (QoS).

In this paper, we consider the call admission problem in cellular network with two classes of voice users. In the first part of paper, we introduce a two-threshold guard channel policy and study its limiting behavior under the stationary traffic. Then we give an algorithm for finding the optimal number of guard channels. In the second part of this paper, we give an algorithm, which minimizes th...

An important parameter in ATM-based network design and management is the cell loss probability in ATM multiplexers. However, it depends on many unknown and unpredictable traac parameters such as burst length distribution, mean rate, etc. In this paper, we propose a simple and robust fuzzy-based algorithm to predict the cell loss probability in large-sized systems based only on both a small amou...
متن کاملDesign and analysis of QoS supported frequent handover schemes in microcellular ATM networks
Wireless information networks need to employ small radio cells to support large user populations. However, this will impose extra burden on network traffic control as a result of frequent handover behavior. Existing approaches to support a high handover rate still have cell loss and cell out-of-sequence penalty while the handover is in progress. This paper proposes a novel handover protocol tha...
